Crown Of Midnight – Sarah J Maas
Be warned, the review will probably contain some many spoilers!!
“Before she was deadly, Now she is unstoppable”
So this book was an emotional roller coaster for me! It was just full of all kinds of emotions!!
The second book of the Throne of Glass series “Crown of Midnight” starts with a small time jump from the previous book with Celaena being the king’s champion, meaning she is doing his dirty work. Only she is only pretending to do so, which was kind of a relief because I read the first chapter stressing about whether she was back doing her old job or not !!
So Celaena lives a double “secret” life without the secret factor! She is chasing rebels while in the castle she is kind of avoiding Dorian who is looking at her like a lost puppy, a very adorable one!! Her friendship with Chaol is leaning toward a different direction and Nehemia is a constant companion who loves her dearly! ( I just got emotional and I’m only at the beginning)
Her job as the king’s champion brings her face to face with a rumored rebel leader Archer Finn, who wants to find the lost princess of Terasen. She has one month to find his associates and kill him.
Her relationship with Chaol went over to the next level at his birthday after a very romantic dinner at the rooftop of Celaena’s secret apartment. I’m not a huge fan of romance (and Chaol) but even I have to admit it was very romantic and emotional for Celaena considering how safe and familiar she feels around Chaol, something very uncommon if you think that she has lived a very lonely life, depended only on herself. And as they were getting closer and closer Chaol gets kidnaped by the rebels I order to lure Celaena to them. While freeing him Celaena transforms into a total badass assassin and kills many of them with little effort. I think it was the first time we saw her truly losing control over her inner assassin!!! Totally BADASS!!!!!
There she learns that Nehemia is in danger from the kind and races back to the palace. Unfortunately, too late….
She finds Nehemia in her room brutally murdered and just loses it…she blames Chaol and attacks him, trying to kill him (I secretly enjoined that part). After that she kind of becomes catatonic for a time until she kills her murderer and presents his head to the king. I loved this moment and her, let’s say, mad behavior. It was something we haven’t seen before.
Let’s talk about my FAVORITE scene in the book. I know it is a sad scene but I just LOVED it!! Celaena goes to Nehemia’s grave making a blood promise to see her kingdom freed from the King. Then she sings a mourning Fae song over her grave, with Chaol listening in….This scene literary gave me chills while reading it!!!!
After that Chaol starts wondering about the language Celaena was singing and eventually discovers that Celaena was nobility before Terrasen fell on the hands of the king!!
“But death was her curse and her gift, and death had been her good friend these long, long years.”
Dorian on the other hand after some time trying to win over Celaena and realizing her relationship with Chaol, gives up his attempts and starts trying being her friend. At this point I have to tell that I am a big fan of Dorian and I was shipping him with Celaena until the very last moment, this moment is not in this book so I am not going to talk about it just yet. But at this book we see Dorian develop his own story and I loved him even more!!
In the first book I felt that we were seeing Dorian only because of Celaena. In this book he is finally being his own person with his own story to tell. And he has MAGIC! DORIAN HAS MAGIC!
Celaena in her grief and while trying to find more answers about the lost Wyrdkeys decides to open a portal in another world to talk to Nehemia (Oh Bad Bad idea)…
Nehemia appears but doesn’t was anything useful to Celaena. Then Archer comes and we find out that he was the one who ordered Nehemia’s death….Oh no say goodbye Archer….well in a minute because a monster appears through the portal.
Dorian and Chaol comes to her rescue but they all get hurt and Celaena and Chaol go inside the portal to rescue her dog Fleetfoot!!!!
And BOOM Celaena transforms into Fea !!!!! When they finally get to safety she explains that her great-grandmother was Fea and she could shift until the magic disappeared.
Here I have to warn you again about MAJOR spoilers….
Chaol convinces he king to send Celaena to Wendlyn, a land where magic still exists and where she will be safe from the king if the ever finds out about her Fea lineage, to kill the royal family but he hopes that once she leaves she will never come back. Before she leaves she tell Chaol everything about the king and the Wyrdkeys and gives him the eye of Elena for protection. When they say goodbye Celaena whispers to him a date to help him find out who she really is….
After some research Chaol discovers that the date is the day her parents died and the day she became Celaena….the day when a princess was lost and a assassin was born..because Celaena is really Aelin Ashryver Galathynius, the lost Queen of Terrasen….. FUCKING YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The fairest eyes, from legends old
Of brightest blue, ringed with gold”
The answers was right in front of them all, they were staring her in the eyes all this time. Chaol was thinking that Celaena was helping the lost queen I to take back her kingdom but Celaena IS the lost quuen….
CELAENA IS A QUEEN!!!!!! How cool is that ?? I love a good plot twist and that was the best!! True, it had crossed my mind before but was so confricted that I thought I was just wrong and then THAT!! Thank you Sarah for this final chapter of Crown of Midnight, it was the best!!!!
That was a long review with lots of spoilers but I couldn’t help myself!! Thank you for reading and I would love to know your opinion on my review as well as the book itself!!!
Her Majesty the Queen!!!! ❤ ❤
