Today I will be reviewing The Young Elites by Marie Lu. I know have only been making SJM reviews, and I’m not finished, so I thought it’s time for something different and with this book when I say different I mean DIFFERENT!! As usual the review contains some spoilers so be warned!!
When I first found out about this book I had a feeling that it would be very different from what I had read so far. The first thing that made me believe that was the fact that the main character – Adelina – was a girl with a missing eye.
The book stars with Adelina who is a malfetto, a survive of a plague that left her without an eye and white hair and eyelashes, trying to escape her father, who wants to sold her to a man as a mistress. That doesn’t go well for either of them!! Adelina in an attempt to be free conjures shadow figures and kills her father but is later arrested and will be burned at the stake….
Her executioner, Teren Santoro, is part of the Inquisition Axis an organization that wants to kill all malfettos and, as we learn in time, a malfetto himself. Adelina escapes her own execution with the help of her powers and The Dagger Society. The Dagger Society is a group of Young Elites, malfettos with powers, who are standing up for all malfettos and go against the king and queen of Kenetra.
Adelina goes with the Dagger Society where she meets its members. Enzo, the leader, is able to control fire and he is also the true heir of the throne but was stripped of his title when he became a malfetto. Raffaele can “read” moods and when he tests Adelina he sees that she aligns with lust and darkness.
That darkness is what causes her to love how everyone is intimidated by her when they discover the full extent of her powers!! COME ON, I’ll be honest with myself and with you…I would have loved it too if everyone was afraid of me!!!! YAH!!!!
“I am tired of being used,
hurt, and cast aside. It is my turn to use.
My turn to hurt.”
Now, Enzo is the dark, bad boy kind of guy and he is totally my kind of guy!!! Oh and Adelina’s as we see!! After sharing some very passionate kisses with Adelina he says that they meant nothing to him while Adelina is eavesdropping…Oops!!!
Adelina feeling betrayed and having every right to feel that way…goes to Teren in order to save her sister. Using her powers she manages to take her sister away and she finds out that she is a Young Elite too! She can take away the powers of other Elites and she has been doing it for years to stop Adelina from having access to her own powers…mmm not very sisterly Violeta!!!
After the death of the king, the massacre of many malfettos and the capture of Raffaelle Enzo and Teren agree to a duel. During the duel Adelina and Violeta attack Teren while he is fighting Enzo but in the end Enzo loses….Adelina and Violeta get kicked out of the Dagger Society and the betrayal she felt turned to anger.
“No one wants you to be yourself. They want you to be the version of yourself that they like.”
I have to say that it isn’t every day that I am reading a book that the main character has something so dark inside of her that makes me think how far can she go??? It was a strange and unfamiliar feeling but I was kind of invigorating to see things from a different point of view. On occasions, I even caught myself thinking “She is kind of right on this one”.
I hadn’t read many reviews on this book and I knew that it was dark but what I read was a total surprise to me. It may not show clearly on my review but I liked this book for reason that I don’t really know myself!!! Adelina is a person who was mentally abused for many years and that made her angry towards everything including life itself. If you ask me to summarize the book in one word that would be Betrayal!
This is it for now!! I can’t wait to hear your opinion on the book and my review!! If you have anything to suggest that will make my reviews better please don’t hesitate to say it!!!
Her Majesty the Queen!!!! ❤ ❤
