Hello everyone!!! So, the original plan was to review the A Court of Thorns and Roses by SJM but I just finished the Assassin’s Creed: Renaissance by Oliver Bowden and since I was asked really nicely, by Cassiopeia’s Moon ,to give my opinion as soon as possible I decided to write about this first!!
The review is Spoiler Free!!
The book is about Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a young man who watches his family die and dedicates his life to taking revenge from the person responsible. The plot is based on the video game but I have never played it so I can’t say if and how much they are alike!
This book had many positive characteristics for me but it also had some that were not so positive. First of all I’m going to start with the positive aspects of the book!
“Everything is permitted, Nothing is true.”
First of all, our story takes place in Florence! For me it was something really nice because I love Italy in general and especially Florence. Ezio travels in many diferrent parts of Italy throughout the book which was like a nice little tour of Italy. Also, the time the book takes place was the best years for Florence and Italy in general!!
The plot had very good points. The war between the Order of the Knights Templar and the Order of the Assassins is a centuries old rival with many interesting faces being involved with either of the two sides of the war. The writer uses many well-known, historical characters like Leonardo Da Vinci, Niccolo Machiavelli and Lorenzo De Medici in a way that makes it believable for the reader. It makes you see these historical faces really differently.
The thing that it didn’t like about the book is that the writer squeezes 28 years into one book. As a consequence there were times when I was reading the book that I was a little lost, I couldn’t be sure how much time had passed. Another thing that I didn’t really like and I think it had something to do with this fact is that many characters weren’t sufficiently developed. It felt like there was some shallowness into the whole length of the book.
Overall, I think the book was good but you have to know what you’re reading. If you start reading it and you expect to read something deep you’ll be disappointed but if you want something light and fun, filled with action, this book is for you!!!
I hope you enjoined my review!! I know this review is shorter than my usual reviews but I decided to make it totally spoiler free and focus on the feeling and not on the events of the book!!
“Requiescat in pace.”
