Hello!!! Hello!!!! I’m back with another review for you!!! King’s Cage by Victoria Aveyard!!! I finished this book yesterday and even though I have a huge list of reviews to write about books I have finished a long while ago I still decided to write about King’s Cage!!!
King’s Cage is the third book from the Red Queen series. The previous book left us with Mare captured by Maven and the Scarlet Guard recruiting newbloods in order to oppose Maven and his army of both Reds and Silvers.
Warning: There will be some spoilers from the book!!!!
I my mind I have split the book in two parts: the first is from the beginning to the moment of Mare’s rescue and the second is from the rescue to the end!!!
“I’m not leaving this place unless I leave behind
Let’s talk about the first part. In the first part we see how Mare passes her days in Maven’s palace and how Maven is handling the whole situation with Mare so close to him. From my point of view the whole first part of the book was a constant psychological war wagging between Mare and Maven. The author has done a great job of how she explains the way Maven ended up like this. He knows that there are pieces of himself, of his mind, missing thanks to Elara and that the process started since he was a babe but he also says he doesn’t want to stop…Elara wasn’t just a puppeteer pulling his strings, she was a caver, molding his mind in a way that even after her death she left behind her creation. But that creation was’t perfect the parts she couldn’t mold or erase became, a first, a life line for Maven and later they progressed to the point of obsession. Like his strange love for Mare. Maven’s mind may be someone else’s creation but now he controls it and he does t well. He is smart and charismatic a dangerous combination!
“Monsters are most dangerous when they’re afraid”
Mare knows some of the deep wounds left behind by Elara and as the book progresses she learns even more just how deep they run. So she exploits Maven’s weaknesses as best she can. Also, as much as Maven tries to use her to his advantage on the war between Reds and Silvers she doesn’t break. She maintains her dignity and plays the role Maven has created for her without complaint even though she is an unwilling player.
Ok this turned out a little heavier than I undissipated but ok…not I have to say even though I liked how we learned more about Maven and how he became a monster I would have liked if the author had kept it a little bit shorter….some parts were a little bit unnecessary and I wanted to skip them just to read something more exciting!!! The big NO in the first part for me was Cameron’s POV!!!!! Didn’t like it and I found it totally disappointing. Of course I don’t mean what we shouldn’t have learned what was happening with the Scarlet Guard but I was prepared to finally read from Cal’s POV and when I saw Cameron I was extremely disappointed!!!
Now for the second part of the book!!! After an attack/rescue mission on the Palace on the day of Maven’s wedding Mare reunites with Cal, her family, the Scarlet Guard and her lighting having a little unexpected help in the face of Evangeline Samos ex-fiancée of Maven and now Princess of the Rift!!! Were the first part of the book was heavily psychological the second part is almost full of action!!! After starting to get back on a routine, Mare along with Cal and other members of the Guard, Reds, Silvers and Newbloods, they have to defend a military base from Maven’s forces!!! We are talking about a HELL of a fight scene!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know most people didn’t like the ending but I can’t say I am angry with Cal!!! I am a big Cal fan and the reason is that I admire his sense of duty. Yes he loves Mare and it’s really sweet but I have read so many YA books where the main character just forgets everything after he falls in love with a girl that I find Cal’s stance realistic and more grounded. It may be an unpopular opinion but I have loved Cal from the very first book that that reason and I’m kind of glad that he is steady in his opinions. Also he wants to do good and he knows if he can be King he will be able to make a differences however small that maybe!!!! I would love to hear your opinions and to discuss it if you like!!!!!
“The crown is in the heart, and the heart do not change”
Overall it was a very good book even though it didn’t have plot twists, it was another kind of good!!!
